As many of you may already know, our Section Emergency Coordinator Paul Silverzweig N1PSX has already deployed this year to Texas to provide support after Hurricane Harvey and to Puerto Rico to provide support after Hurricane Maria.

Paul has been asked to return to Puerto Rico to provide additional support. He will be leaving this weekend to assist for several weeks. I wish him luck and I’m proud to serve under his leadership here at RI ARES.

The worlds largest radio telescope until recently when China completed construction on theirs, the Arecibo Radio Telescope is amazing… it sustained some serious damage during the two hurricanes, but will be repaired once the island gets stabilized…”

The final draft of the RRI Training Manual, TR-001 is now available for download. This document covers topics such as; “An Introduction to Disaster Telecommunications Theory,” “RRI Manual Mode Networks,” “Introduction to the RRI Digital Traffic Network,” “Basic Radiotelephone Net Procedures,””Radiotelegraph Net Procedures,” and so forth.

Feel free to peruse the manual and make suggestions or provide feedback to RRI.

 

Winter Field Day is coming up the last weekend in January (27th-28th)… I hope many of you participate… the event has been growing in participation, and I believe this year will top last year, as last year topped the year before.

And I hope we have weather like have had the last couple of years… nearly Fall like weather…

Although it is likely a good idea, I had not planned to implement an RI ARES set up for Winter Field Day… I am organizing the Newport County Radio Club effort this year, like last year and the year before… Perhaps we can investigate doing an ARES set up for next year…

Last night’s net went well. We had 20 check ins and ran over time. A good introductory net Next time we will offer up some short and fun training exercises… I hope we have at least as many check ins… December 19th… same place and time. Thanks to all who participated.

In the interim enjoy family time for Thanksgiving. Family time is scarce these days. Enjoy, and be safe.

RI ARES welcomes Tim Cashman KB1UZD as an Emergency Coordinator for Washington County in the South Kingstown area, Jeremy Taylor K1JST as an Emergency Coordinator for Kent County, and Martin Mendelson N1JMA as the Emergency Coordinator for Skywarn activities state-wide.

Tim is a long time ham who also acts as shelter manager for South Kingstown/Narragansett, as sometime Boy Scout troop leader, and otherwise savvy emergency communications operator.

Jeremy has a long background in IT, is an active ham, and is involved with the Exeter West Greenwich Schools. He has actively been helping with the development of the ARES RI membership website, coming soon.

Martin has been the Skywarn coordinator in RI for many years, and is the primary net control station for the Skywarn Net every Wednesday evening at 8:30 on the KA1RCI (look up NB1RI in updated repeater references) Network of repeaters.
